Sinopsis

Como pone de manifiesto El otoño de la Edad Media, Johan Huizinga (1872-1945) llevó a la perfección la tarea de reconstruir las formas de vida y las pautas culturales del pasado. Con " Homo ludens " , el gran historiador holandés se propuso mostrar la insuficiencia de las imágenes convencionales del «homo sapiens» y el «homo faber». No sólo constituye el juego una función humana tan esencial como la reflexión o el trabajo, sino que, además, la génesis y el desarrollo de la cultura poseen un carácter lúdico. El estudio del juego como fenómeno cultural, y no como una función biológica, es precisamente el tema de este «egregio libro» (en palabras de Ortega), concebido más desde los supuestos del pensamiento científico-cultural que a partir de las interpretaciones psicológicas y los conceptos y explicaciones etnológicas.

HUIZINGA, JOHAN

Johan Huizinga, nacido en 1872, fue profesor de Historia en la Universidad de Leiden hasta 1942, cuando los nazis cerraron la universidad y lo mantuvieron prisionero hasta poco antes de su muerte en 1945. Alianza Editorial ha publicado, también, una de las más importantes obras de madurez del gran historiador holandés, Homo ludens .
